Municipal Museum of Zlaté Hory

The Municipal Museum in Zlaté Hory is housed in the former post office building, which was built in 1698 in the Dutch Baroque style by the Nentwig family. In the past, it was one of the stops on the postal route to Poland, where it was also possible to spend the night. In addition to other important personalities, Emperor Josef II also spent the night here.

At the moment, you can see several exhibits in the museum that document the history of Zlaté Hory. Mining is the most prominent, so you’ll see over 300-year-old mining artefacts here (for example, the torso of a mine cart, miner’s necks, Roman ladders and miner’s axes). On the 1st floor of the museum there is a model of a medieval tunnel with sound effects, then in the basement you will find an exhibition dedicated to modern mining.

You can also admire the rich collection of minerals from the Zlaté Hory ore district with a sample of macroscopic gold. There is also an exhibition dedicated to the Zlaté Hory spa, the creation of the Maria Hilf pilgrimage site and the lookout tower on Biskupská kupa. And, of course, we must not forget the exhibition about local witch trials.
